Power of friendship!!

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. His name was Kyle.  I t looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home  all his books on a Friday?  He must really be a nerd.”  I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow
afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at  him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.  His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes. My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really  should get lives.  ” He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!”  There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.  I helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived.  As it turned out, he
lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before.  He said he had gone to private school before now.  I would have never hung out with a private school kid before. We talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books. He turned out to be a pretty cool kid.
I asked him if he wanted to play a little football with my
friends. He said yes. We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of
books again.  I stopped him and said, “Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!”  He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best  friends.
When we were seniors, we began to think  about college.  Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be  friends, that the miles would never be a problem.  He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class.  I teased him all the time
about  being a nerd.  He had to prepare a speech for graduation.  I was so glad it  wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.
Graduation day, I saw Kyle.  He looked great.  He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses.  He had more dates than I had and all the girls loved him. Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days.
I could see that he was nervous about his speech.  So, I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!”  He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.  “Thanks,” he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began.
  “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years.Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach…but mostly your friends… I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.   I am going to tell you a story.” I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story 
of the first day we met.  He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.  He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn’t have to  do it later and was carrying his stuff home.  He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile.  “Thankfully, I was saved.  My friend saved me from doing the
unspeakable.”   I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this
handsome,popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.  I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize it’s depth.  

Never underestimate the power of your actions.  With one small
gesture you can change a person’s life.  For better or for worse.  God puts us all in each other’s lives to impact one another in some way. Look for God in others.

PENGARUH PENAMBAHAN CN DAN  Pb(II)

TERHADAP FOTOREDUKSI Cr(VI) TERKATALISIS TiO2

INTISARI

Telah dipelajari pengaruh Pb(II) dan sianida pada fotoreduksi Cr(VI) yang dikatalis oleh fotokatalis TiO2. Proses fotoreduksi dilakukan dengan cara menyinari campuran yang terdiri dari larutan ion Cr(VI), serbuk TiO2, Pb(II) dan sianida yang diaduk pada waktu tertentu dalam reaktor tertutup yang dilengkapi lampu sinar UV.. Efektivitas fotoreduksi dinyatakan sebagai % ion Cr(VI) yang tereduksi, yang dihitung berdasarkan selisih antara massa ion Cr(VI) mula-mula sebelum reaksi fotoreduksi dengan massa ion Cr(VI) sisa. Ion Cr(VI) yang tidak tereduksi ditentukan menggunakan metode spektrofotometri UV-visibel dengan pereaksi 1,5-difenilkarbazida.

Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa adanya Pb(II) dan fotokatalis TiO2 dapat meningkatkan efektivitas fotoreduksi ion Cr(VI) terkatalisis TiO2. Peningkatan konsentrasi  0,25 – 4 mmol untuk setiap mmol Pb(II) dapat meningkatkan efektifitas fotoreduksi mencapai hasil yang relative tinggi. Adanya Pb(II) pada peningkatan pH 2 – 6 memberikan peningkatan fotoreduksi Pb(II), dan fotoreduksi mengalami penurunan pada peningkatan pH 7-12, selain itu, adanya sianida menurunkan fotoreduksi Cr(VI) dan pada penambahan sianida pada konsentrasi lebih dari 0,25 mmol untuk setiap mmol Cr(VI) penurunan fotoreduksi tampak lebih jelas. Peningkatan pH larutan dari 2-7 dengan adanya sianida dapat menaikkan efektifitas fotoreduksi Cr(VI) tapi dengan meningkatnya pH larutan lebih dari 7 menurunkan fotoreduksi Cr(VI).

Penambahan zat additif  borax yang biasa digunakan sebagai bisa mendatangkan malapetaka bagi konsumennya. Apabila kita mengkonsumsi borax yang notabene adalah bahan solder, bahan pembersih, pengawet kayu, antiseptik kayu, dan pengontrol kecoak. Sinonimnya natrium biborat, natrium piroborat, natrium tetraborat. Sifatnya berwarna putih dan sedikit larut dalam air. Sering mengonsumsi makanan berboraks akan menyebabkan gangguan otak, hati, lemak, dan ginjal. Dalam jumlah banyak, boraks menyebabkan demam, anuria (tidak terbentuknya urin), koma, merangsang sistem saraf pusat, menimbulkan depresi, apatis, sianosis, tekanan darah turun, kerusakan ginjal, pingsan, bahkan kematian.   1. Onde2 yang mengandung borax dan ber-lilin akan berbentuk bulat sempurna sedang yang aman tidak bulat sempurna
  2. Onde2 berborax akan memantul apabila di lempar.
  3. Ketika sudah dingin, susah di sobek. apabila disobek keras
  4. Pisang molen berborax,kulitnya kering sedang yang tidak berborax sedikit berminyak
  5. kalau disobek akan menghasilkan banyak remah sedang yang aman tidak

A carcinogenic contaminant of cosmetic products. Almost 50% of cosmetics containing ethoxylated surfactants were found to contain dioxane. See Ethoxylated surfactants

  • 1,4-Dioxane may exert its effects through inhalation, skin absorption and ingestion
  • 1,4-Dioxane is listed as a carcinogen.
  • Effects of overexposure: 1,4-dioxane is an eye and mucous membrane irritant, primary skin irritant, central nervous system depressant, nephrotoxin, and hepatotoxin.
  • Acute exposure causes irritation, headache, dizziness, and narcosis. Chronic inhalation exposure can produce damage to the liver and kidneys, and blood disorders.
  • Medical condition aggravated by exposure preclude from exposure those individuals with disease of the blood, liver kidneys, central nervous system, and those susceptible to dermatitis.

2-bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol (Bronopol)

Toxic, causes allergic contact dermatitis. See Nitrosating agents


Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)

A very drying and irritating solvent and dehydrator that strips your skin’s natural acid mantle, making us more vulnerable to bacteria, moulds and viruses. It is made from propylene, a petroleum derivative. It may promote brown spots and premature aging of skin.

Anionic Surfactants

Anionic refers to the negative charge these surfactants have. They may be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic. Surfactants can pose serious health threats. They are used in car washes, as garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers – and in 90% of personal-care products that foam. They are also known as:

  • Material is highly toxic via oral route.

  • Effects of overexposure: mists can cause irritation to the skin, eyes, nose, throat and mucous membranes. Avoid direct contact. Symptoms: muscular paralysis, low blood pressure, cns depression and weakness.

  • Emergency and first aid procedures:

    • Eyes – corrosive! Immediately wash eyes with plenty of water.

    • Inhalation – remove person to fresh air. Give oxygen (if breathing is difficult). Call physician.

    • Ingestion – if conscious, immediately drink large quantities of fluid to dilute and induce vomiting. Call physician.


Butylated Hudroxyanisole (BHA)

Causes allergic contact dermatitis.


Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT)

Causes allergic contact dermatitis. Contains toluene. See Toluene


Cationic surfactants

These chemicals have a positive electrical charge. They contain a quaternary ammonium group and are often called “quats”. These are used in hair conditioners, but originated from the paper and fabric industries as softeners and anti-static agents. In the long run they cause the hair to become dry and brittle. They are synthetic, irritating, allergenic and toxic, and oral intake of them can be lethal.

DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (triethanolamine)

Often used in cosmetics to adjust the pH, and used with many fatty acids to convert acid to salt (stearate), which then becomes the base for a cleanser. TEA causes allergic reactions including eye problems, dryness of hair and skin, and could be toxic if absorbed into the body over a long period of time.

These chemicals are already restricted in Europe due to known carcinogenic effects. Dr. Samuel Epstein (Professor of Environmental Health at the University of Illinois) says that repeated skin applications . . . of DEA-based detergents resulted in a major increase in the incidence of liver and kidney cancer.   • Health Hazard Acute And Chronic: Product is severely irritating to body tissues and possibly corrosive to the eyes.
  • Explanation Carcinogenicity: Amines react with nitrosating agents to form nitrosamines, which are carcinogenic.

Diazolidinyl urea

Established as a primary cause of contact dermatitis (American Academy of Dermatology). Contains formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical, is toxic by inhalation, a strong irritant, and causes contact dermatitis. See Formaldehyde From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

  • Causes severe eye irritation. May cause skin irritation. Signs and symptoms of exposure
  • Symptoms of inhalation: if misted, will cause irritation of mucous membranes, nose, eyes and throat. Coughing, difficulty in breathing.
  • Symptoms of skin contact: contact causes smarting and burning sensations, inflammation, burns, painful blisters. Profound damage to tissue.
  • Symptoms of eye contact: will cause painful burning or stinging of eyes and lids, watering of eyes, and inflammation of conjunctiva.

Ethoxylated surfactants are widely used in cosmetics as foaming agents, emulsifiers and humectants. As part of the manufacturing process the toxic chemical 1,4-dioxane, a potent carcinogen, is generated.On the label, they are identified by the prefix “PEG”, “polyethylene”, “polyethylene glycol”, “polyoxyethylene”, “-eth-“, or “-oxynol-“. FD&C Colour Pigments

Synthetic colours made from coal tar. Contain heavy metal salts that deposit toxins onto the skin, causing skin sensitivity and irritation. Animal studies have shown almost all of them to be carcinogenic.


Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen (causes cancer). Causes allergic, irritant and contact dermatitis, headaches and chronic fatigue. The vapour is extremely irritating to the eyes, nose and throat (mucous membranes). See Nitrosating agents


Fragrance

Fragrance on a label can indicate the presence of up to four thousand separate ingredients, many toxic or carcinogenic. Symptoms reported to the USA FDA include headaches, dizziness, allergic rashes, skin discoloration, violent coughing and vomiting, and skin irritation. Clinical observation proves fragrances can affect the central nervous system, causing depression, hyperactivity, and irritability.

Imidazolidinyl urea

The trade name for this chemical is Germall 115. Releases formaldehyde, a carcinogenic chemical, into cosmetics at over 10°C. Toxic. See Formaldehyde

Any chemicals used on sheep will contaminate the lanolin obtained from the wool. The majority of lanolin used in cosmetics is highly contaminated with chlorinated organo pesticides like DDT.

Mineral Oil

Petroleum by-product that coats the skin like plastic, clogging the pores. Interferes with skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promoting acne and other disorders. Slows down skin function and cell development, resulting in premature aging. Used in many products (baby oil is 100% mineral oil!) Any mineral oil derivative can be contaminated with cancer causing PAH’s (Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons). Manufacturers use petrolatum because it is unbelievably cheap.

Nitrosating Agents

  • Emergency overview: Warning! Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract. May cause allergic skin reaction.
  • Skin contact: Causes irritation to skin. Symptoms include redness, itching, and pain. May cause allergic skin reactions.
  • Eye contact: Causes irritation, redness, and pain.

Paraffin wax/oil

Paraffin Wax is mineral oil wax. See Mineral Oil


Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) compounds

Potentially carcinogenic petroleum ingredient that can alter and reduce the skin’s natural moisture factor. This could increase the appearance of aging and leave you more vulnerable to bacteria. Used in cleansers to dissolve oil and grease. It adjusts the melting point and thickens products. Also used in caustic spray-on oven cleaners. See Ethoxylated surfactants

Propylene/Butylene Glycol

Propylene glycol (PG) is a petroleum derivative. It penetrates the skin and can weaken protein and cellular structure. Commonly used to make extracts from herbs. PG is strong enough to remove barnacles from boats! The EPA considers PG so toxic that it requires workers to wear protective gloves, clothing and goggles and to dispose of any PG solutions by burying them in the ground. Because PG penetrates the skin so quickly, the EPA warns against skin contact to prevent consequences such as brain, liver, and kidney abnormalities. But there isn’t even a warning label on products such as stick deodorants, where the concentration is greater than in most industrial applications.From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

  • Health Hazard Acute And Chronic
  • Inhalation: May cause respiratory and throat Irritation, central nervous system depression, blood and kidney disorders. May cause Nystagmus, Lymphocytosis.
  • Skin: Irritation and dermatitis, absorption.
  • Eyes: Irritation and conjunctivitis.

PVP/VA Copolymer

A petroleum-derived chemical used in hairsprays, wavesets and other cosmetics. It can be considered toxic, since particles may contribute to foreign bodies in the lungs of sensitive persons.


Quaternium-7, 15, 31, 60, etc

Toxic, causes skin rashes and allergic reactions. See Nitrosating agents From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

  • Skin: Prolonged or repeated exposure may cause skin irritation. May cause more severe response if skin is damp.
  • May be a weak skin sensitizer in susceptible individuals at greater than 1% in aqueous solution.

Rancid Natural Emollients

Natural oils used in cosmetics should be cold pressed. The refined vegetable oils found on supermarket shelves and many health food stores which lack colour, odour and taste are devoid of nutrients, essential fatty acids, vitamins and unsaponifiables – all valuable skin conditioning agents! They also contain poisonous “trans” fatty acids as a result of the refining process.Another important factor to consider with creams made from plant oil is the use-by date. The most beneficial plant oils (like rosehip, borage and evening primrose oils) are polyunsaturated, which means they oxidise and go rancid fairly quickly (about 6 months). Most off-the-shelf cosmetics have a shelf life of three years. Rancid oils are harmful, they form free-radicals, which damage and age your skin.


Silicone derived emollients

Silicone emollients are occlusive – that is they coat the skin, trapping anything beneath it, and do not allow the skin to breathe (much like plastic wrap would do.)Recent studies have indicated that prolonged exposure of the skin to sweat, by occlusion, causes skin irritation. Some synthetic emollients are known tumour promoters and accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing negative environmental impact.

Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES)

Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate (ALS)

Used in car washes, garage floor cleaners and engine degreasers – and in 90% of products that foam. Animals exposed to SLS and ALS experience eye damage, central nervous system depression, laboured breathing, diarrhoea, severe skin irritation, and even death.

Young eyes may not develop properly if exposed to SLS and ALS because proteins are dissolved. SLS and ALS may also damage the skin’s immune system by causing layers to separate and inflame. Stearalkonium Chloride

A chemical used in hair conditioners and creams. Causes allergic reactions. Stearalkonium chloride was developed by the fabric industry as a fabric softener, and is a lot cheaper and easier to use in hair conditioning formulas than proteins or herbals, which do help hair health. Talc

Scientific studies have shown that routine application of talcum powder in the genital area is associated with a three-to-fourfold increase in the development of ovarian cancer.


TEA (Triethanolamine) Laureth Sulfate

Synthetic emulsifier. Highly acidic. Over 40% of cosmetics containing Triethanolamine (TEA), have been found to be contaminated with nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens. See Anionic Surfactants and See Nitrosating agents From Material Safety Data Sheet:

  • Special Hazard Precautions: Product is severely irritating to body tissues and possibly corrosive to the eyes. Handle with care. Avoid eye & skin contact. Avoid breathing vapors if generated. If there is danger of eye contact, wear a face shield.
  • Explanation Carcinogenicity: Amines react with nitrosating agents to form nitrosoamines, which are carcinogenic.

Toluene

From Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS):

  • Poison! Danger! Harmful or fatal if swallowed. Harmful if inhaled or absorbed through skin.
  • Vapor harmful. Flammable liquid and vapor. May affect liver, kidneys, blood system, or central nervous system. Causes irritation to skin, eyes and respiratory tract.
  • Inhalation: inhalation may cause irritation of the upper respiratory tract. Symptoms of overexposure may include fatigue, confusion, headache, dizziness and drowsiness. Peculiar skin sensations (e. G. Pins and needles) or numbness may be produced. Very high concentrations may cause unconsciousness and death.
  • Ingestion: swallowing may cause abdominal spasms and other symptoms that parallel over-exposure from inhalation. Aspiration of material into the lungs can cause chemical pneumonitis, which may be fatal. Skin contact: causes irritation. May be absorbed through skin.
  • Eye contact: causes severe eye irritation with redness and pain. Chronic exposure: reports of chronic poisoning describe anemia, decreased blood cell count and bone marrow hypoplasia. Liver and kidney damage may occur. Repeated or prolonged contact has a defatting action, causing drying, redness, and dermatitis.
  • Exposure to toluene may affect the developing foetus.

Protect Yourself From Harmful Chemicals in Cosmetics and Household Products

Every day, women are exposed to chemicals in cosmetics, household cleaners, plastics, food, water and many other sources. Common household chemicals have been linked to more than 200 health problems including asthma, depression, anxiety, various cancers (including breast, ovarian and brain), birth defects and developmental disabilities, as well as reproductive, cardiovascular and immune system disorders. Many of these chemicals are stored in our bodies and accumulate over time to cause health problems after years of gradual exposure.

The bad news: women are exposed to a far greater number of harmful chemicals than men . In general, women use more personal care products (such as makeup, perfume, nail care and hair care products), do most of the household cleaning (still!), eat more foods with artificial sweeteners, handle more indoor pesticides (e.g., bug sprays), sprinkle more carpet freshener, and burn more scented candles than men. For these reasons, women are at higher risk for health problems due to long-term, low-level exposure to harmful household chemicals. Although women are at higher risk than men, the group with the highest risk of all is young children. The liver is the main organ that removes toxins from the body and until two years of age, babies’ livers are underdeveloped and not fully capable of removing harmful chemicals from their bodies.

The good news: most household chemical exposure is preventable . By altering your practices, you can decrease exposure to household chemicals. By reducing your family’s daily chemical exposure, you can reduce the chances of developing illnesses such as cancer, anxiety, respiratory problems, and even heart disease and stroke attributed to low-level exposure during a long period.

Reducing exposure is not as difficult as you may think. Once you learn about the safe, natural alternatives for the chemical-containing products in your home, it’s simply a matter of learning which products and ingredients to choose and which to avoid. For personal care, cleaning products and pesticides, it means learning about the ingredients listed on the product labels. Here are some tips to help you do that.

In choosing cosmetics and household cleaners, AVOID or MINIMIZE the following:

  • Products that contain ingredients with long, difficult-to-pronounce names. These are usually synthetic (“man-made”) chemicals that are untested for their effects on human health.
  • Products with strong scents or odors. This includes perfume, cologne, scented lotion, powder, etc. These items contain chemicals called volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which destroy brain cells, disrupt hormone function and can cause cancer. When inhaled, these VOCs have easy access to the brain, bloodstream and organs. As toxic vapors, VOCs also “offgas” from new plastics, carpeting and toys, nail polish, paint, etc. Avoid or “air-out” these items for as long as possible before installing or placing them in a closed-room. (Unless you use an effective air purifier, your indoor air often is more polluted than the air outside your home due to fumes offgassing from products you bring inside.)
  • Products with ingredients listed as “fragrance”, “perfume” or “scent”.
  • Products with “Warning”, “Caution”, or “Danger: labels (i.e., cleaning products and pesticides). These labels are there because one or more of the ingredients has the potential for causing serious harm or death.

For safer options/alternatives, look for:

  • Products labeled “organic” or “all-natural” (personal care products and foods), but read further to see how these terms are defined. To ensure organic standards, look for “USDA Certified Organic” or “Quality Assurance International” labels.
  • Personal care products with plant-based oils such as almond oil or jojoba (rather than petroleum-based oils) and an ingredients list you can read and understand.
  • Simple, natural cleaners such as baking soda, vinegar, and lemon juice. Avoid antibacterials (e.g., triclosan) in all products since they are unnecessary for effective cleaning and can create antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause serious health problems.

Take Action!

Develop and pass legislation to protect women and girls

California passed the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2005 (SB484) to call for additional oversight and protection in the cosmetics industry. Taking action is important because the FDA does not review cosmetic ingredients for their safety before they come to market, nor does it have the authority to recall hazardous products.

You can work to pass state legislation similar to the California bill that:

  • Requires cosmetics manufacturers to disclose to the state any product ingredient that is on state or federal lists of chemicals that cause cancer or birth defects.
  • Allows state agencies tasked with protecting women and girls to demand manufacturers supply any health related information about cosmetic ingredients.

Host a “toxic conversation”

Invite activists and friends to a party and ask each one of them to bring along one or two of their favorite cosmetic products and one of the household cleaning products that they use most often. Read the product information labels and discuss “just what is in the make-up I am wearing” and “how harmful are these chemicals I use to clean my home anyway?”
